Trucks, transport, utilities: the right license
1st rule: to have good insurance
Regardless of the appropriate driver’s license, you will need to purchase adequate insurance. It is not only the insurance minimum RC compulsory for all motor vehicles, 4 wheel.
Ensure your truck according to the usage
You must also take out insurance adapted to the use of the vehicle: for example for public transport, special insurance for the transport of people is obligatory. The same applies to the transport of hazardous materials, for which special authorizations and appropriate insurance are necessary. Your truck’s insurance policy must include a warranty covering the danger of hazardous materials. License to drive a heavy truck
The permit to be obtained depends on the tonnage of the HGV vehicle. Note that the trailer is also taken into account. All permits give the ability to tow a trailer, but the size and weight are limited depending on the towing vehicle. For some trucks, you will have to wait 6 months to obtain the final driving license. In the meantime, a certificate is issued, which allows you to drive a truck in France, but not abroad.
Compulsory medical examination and other conditions
On the other hand, the issue of certain permits requires special additional conditions: to hold another permit, to pass a regular medical check, etc.
“HGV” permits, utility, public transit, pickup truck, trailer
Depending on the vehicle, these are B licenses, C license, D license and finally E license. You must be at least 21 years old to drive a truck weighing more than 7.5 tonnes (gross vehicle weight) unless you are a holder a driving diploma (PSC, CAP, or BEP).
The trailer or caravan
You will need to consider the license and the vehicle to know which trailer you can tow. For example, with a car, a caravan requires a specific permit if it exceeds 750 kg. Similarly for trucks or utilities likely to tow a trailer.
The heavyweight license of more than 3.5 tonnes
You need the Permit C. Its validity varies from 1 year to 5 years depending on the age of the driver. You must already hold a license to pass this permit. You will have to undergo a regular medical checkup.
Heavy vehicle license of fewer than 3.5 tonnes
The driving license is required to drive a commercial (car, van or small truck) weighing less than 3.5 tons. Permit B allows towing 1 trailer weighing less than 750kg.
Driving with a caravan or trailer
Towing a caravan depends on the weight of the caravan and the weight of the whole (towing vehicle and caravan towed). The license C or E is required depending on whether a caravan whose weight is greater than 750kg or when the GVW of tractor trailer + is greater than or equal to 3.5 tons. You must already hold the driving license B to pass the permit E. The validity period is between 1 to 5 years according to the age of the driver.
You need the permit E (C), for the driving of vehicles called “coupled” whose tractor enters the category C (the famous “cab” of the road), and whose trailer or semi-trailer exceeds 750 kg. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a C permit. The period of validity depends on your age: five years for those under 60, two years if you are between 60 and 76, only one year if you have over 76 years old.
Permit for public transit
To drive a public transport vehicle, there are several permits, depending on the number of people transported:
- D license : + 9 people on board. Validity period between 1 and 5 years depending on the age of the driver. Already hold a B permit to pass this permit.
What to drive with the classic car license?
Permit B is sesame to obtain other permits, including heavy truck licenses. Meanwhile, the license B gives you certain rights: in particular, driving with a trailer or a caravan, or even people, under certain conditions.
